American Legion Post 9, in conjunction with McFarland State Historic Park and the Greater Florence Chamber of Commerce, are hosting the 75th Anniversary Celebration of the G.I. Bill of Rights (Serviceman’s Readjustment Act) and the accomplishments of Statesman, Senator Ernest “Mac” McFarland, known as one of the two co-authors of the G.I. Bill in Historic Florence, Arizona.

This event is designed to acknowledge, honor and celebrate one of the most far-reaching pieces of legislation ever enacted by the United States Government. In addition, we are honoring the accomplishments of Ernest “Mac” McFarland, a Florence resident and the only known American to serve his state in all three branches of the government.

Our event will begin at 10:00 AM on Saturday, March 30, 2019, with a military parade. The ceremony of celebration will follow immediately after at Padilla Park, 440 Main Street. At this time we will also be honoring Purple Heart recipients, Gold Star families, and our veterans. Festivities will conclude with refreshments at McFarland State Historic Park, 24 W. Ruggles St. As a special “side-event” the Greater Florence Woman’s Club will be opening their building as a “USO Club” afterward.

Proceeds from our event will go the American Legion Post 9, to be divided evenly between their charitable programs and the construction of the Town of Florence’s Veterans Memorial.
